My Reasons to be Healthy

I’ve been extremely healthy, and I’ve been very ill.  I’ve been 100 pounds overweight and depressed (I’m not anymore).  My celiac diagnosis took ten years to get, but the change in my life since then is just remarkable.  I can tell you with certainty, food can poison and food can heal.

I have a brother with an incurable form of cancer, a father-in-law who is blind from diabetes, a grandfather in the late stages of Alzheimer’s, and several relatives who have died from heart disease.  I have learned from all of their experiences.

I have learned that I don’t want to die before my time.  I want to be as healthy as I can be for as long as I can be.  I want to be able to see and play with my great-grandchildren.

I have learned that many (not all) debilitating issues can be prevented, and they are worth preventing.  I have learned that it’s imperative that we each take control over our own health, stop acting helpless, and demand more of ourselves.  I have also learned that sometimes things just happen, and we have to learn to accept them and live our best lives regardless of our diagnosis.

I have learned from others, too.  I have learned from those who judged me when I was very overweight.  I have learned what it’s like to be discounted, looked over, and passed by because of how I appear to someone.  It sucks.  It also shows a lot about the person doing the judging (and it’s far less flattering than being fat).

I know a lot about being healthy although I haven’t always made the best use of that knowledge.  I am now forming a new path to wellness for myself.  I don’t love this path, but I love the idea of preventing the illnesses that are hereditary to me more.

So this section is where I’ll share what I already know, and things I learn on the journey.  I hope you’ll join me.  Your future is worth the effort.
